What's my running gait?
Your running gait will play a part in what shoe is the best running shoe for you, and this is a service we offer in store at Sole Mate. How you land, on your heel, on your toes or midfoot also makes a difference. Do you overpronate, supernate or do you have a neutral gait? Some of our running shoes and trainers are softer and more cushioned and plush, some are firmer for runners that need an extra bit of stability.
Running shoes "drop"
Then there's the drop to consider. The drop is the difference between how high your heel is from the floor vs how high your toes are. Most running shoes and trainers will elevate your heel slightly to propel you into a forward motion, brands like Altra are famous for creating shoes with a "zero drop" which means your feet are in a more natural stance, where your heel and toes are the same height from the ground. Think of it as bare foot running, but with lovely cushioning under foot!
You might be thinking, this all sounds complicated I just want a shoe for the running on road. Well they all do that, but getting the right one is important. It will benefit your running, your recovery and dramatically reduce the chance of injury.
